Most messaging systems have a Read Receipt option, so why can't SchoolStatus?
What is a "read" receipt?
Read Receipts are a status indicator notifying a sender that the recipient opened the message. SchoolStatus uses the standard SMS protocol (Short Message Service protocol) and this does not support Read Receipts.
What is SMS protocol?
SMS is a text messaging service component of most telephone, internet, and mobile device systems. It uses standardized communication protocols to enable mobile devices to exchange short text messages.
If I can't see if the message has been opened, what can I see?
We receive status callbacks from our cloud communications platform, Twilio. These callbacks help us determine some things about the status of the message.
The below picture illustrates what a user will see on your account for the status of a message.
Here is the list, and what each one means:
- Queued - You have completed the message, and it will be sent soon.
- Sent - Your message has been sent for delivery.
- Delivered - Your message reached the recipient's inbox.
- Undelivered - Your message is unable to reach the recipient's inbox (perhaps because the device is off or offline.
- Failed - Your message could not be sent. Please reach out to the parent to update the number, ask if they have blocked communications, etc.
*Note* If you're reviewing your engagement history, you may see an additional status of 'Opened'. Again, this is only in reference to emails and NOT text messages. For email, your status descriptions are:
- Delivered - Your message reached the recipient's inbox.
- Undelivered - Your message is unable to reach the recipient's inbox.
- Failed - Your message could not be sent. This could be for a number of reasons but is most likely due to the email address being incorrect.
- Opened - Your email message has been opened by your recipient.
