Setting a Preferred Contact status for a student's contact is required for sending Broadcast Messages and Course Emails and probably a good idea in general. Once a contact has been marked as a Preferred Contact, the selected contact will carry over to the next school year or until they are removed from your SIS - Student Information System.
First, Why Do I Need to Mark Contacts as Preferred?
Often times there are many contacts for a student in your Student Information System. When you send a broadcast message or an email to an entire course, you want to be sure you're sending it to the correct recipients. So we use the Star designation to indicate which contacts should receive broadcast messages and course emails.
Two Methods of Setting a Preferred Contact
1. Go to the Student Card and Star a contact manually for each student. You can check out this article for a detailed guide on Starring Contacts.
2. You can use the Preferred Contact Management Tool.
Preferred Contact Management
You'll find this tool on the left hand side of the SchoolStatus landing page under Communication. Click on Preferred Contacts.
The Preferred Contact Management Tool will let you quickly and easily see which of your students do not have a preferred contact set. Look at the right side of the screen to know which students have a preferred contact set and which don't.
Click on the dropdown arrow to display more information.
Then click on the Star to set a contact as preferred. You can have as many preferred contacts as you'd like on a student's contact list, but remember, a Broadcast cannot be sent without setting preferred contacts first.
