Setting a Preferred Contact status for a student's contact is required for sending Broadcast messages. This is because a student might have Mom, Dad, and a doctor listed as contacts. The doctor does not need to know if a student has a test coming up, but Mom and Dad do. When Mom and Dad are listed as Preferred Contacts, that Broadcast message will only go to Mom and Dad, while the doctor can spend her time making people feel better.
Two Methods of Setting a Preferred Contact
1. Go to the Student Card and Star a contact manually for each student. You can check out this article for a detailed guide on Starring Contacts.
2. You can use the Preferred Contact Management Tool.
Preferred Contact Management
You'll find this tool on the left hand side of the SchoolStatus landing page under Communication. Click on Preferred Contacts.
The Preferred Contact Management Tool will let you quickly and easily see which of your students do not have a preferred contact set. Look at the right side of the screen to know which students have a preferred contact set and which don't.
Click on the dropdown arrow to display more information.
Then click on the Star to set a contact as preferred. You can have as many preferred contacts as you'd like on a student's contact list, but remember, a Broadcast cannot be sent without setting preferred contacts first.
